Most distributed economic systems are designed top-down: define the network, then invite nodes to join. The sovereign economic node inverts this. You begin with a single agent, their own device, their own files, and a vocabulary precise enough to describe every economic event they participate in. The network emerges from connected nodes, each already coherent on its own.
ValueFlows provides exactly that vocabulary. Its three primitives, Agent, EconomicResource, and EconomicEvent, are sufficient to describe every economic interaction a person participates in: hours worked, services delivered, tools used, payments received, commitments made. The question is not whether to adopt a complex platform, but what format to use for the files.
Markdown as Economic Ledger
Plain text files with YAML frontmatter satisfy all the requirements for a VF-compliant personal ledger:
- Human-readable without any application
- Versionable with git (providing an immutable audit trail)
- Queryable via full-text search and SQL (with a local index like SQLite)
- Compatible with AI tools that can reason across structured text
- Portable across machines without data migration
Each file becomes a typed VF entity. A task file is an EconomicEvent with action work. An expense file is an EconomicEvent with action use or consume. An invoice is a VF Claim. A project is a VF Process. The vocabulary is additive: existing fields remain unchanged, and VF-specific fields (vf_action, vf_provider, vf_resource_quantity, vf_input_of) are added alongside them.
The git history of this file collection is itself the economic audit trail. Every commit is a timestamped, tamper-evident record of an economic state change. No blockchain required at the personal scale.
The Fractal Sovereignty Pattern
The personal VF ledger is not a prototype to be discarded when a networked system becomes available. It is the individual scale of a pattern that repeats at every larger scale:

Open Value Networks depend on exactly this structure: each participant maintains their own agent-centric ledger, and the network aggregates contribution records without any single actor controlling the data.
From Personal Ledger to P2P Network
The bridge is hREA, the Holochain implementation of ValueFlows. Because hREA uses the same VF vocabulary, a local Markdown-based ledger is already shaped as a Holochain entry. When federation is desired, the local files become the data source for a Holochain agent node. No migration is required: the frontmatter fields map directly to hREA entry types.
This means the personal VF system is not “preparing” for the network. It IS the network, at individual scale, already running. Adding the Holochain layer is adding synchronization, not changing the model.
The contribution data that flows into OVN governance models (like Sensorica or Nondominium-style organizations) can be computed from the same records that a person uses for their own daily bookkeeping. There is no separate “OVN accounting system” to populate; the personal ledger IS the contribution record.
Non-Monetary Value as First-Class Citizen
Traditional accounting software tracks money. VF tracks all forms of value through its action vocabulary: work (labor contribution), cite (knowledge reference), produce (artifact creation), use (tool or resource used), deliver-service (service rendered). A knowledge note written for a commons project is a produce event referencing a knowledge resource. A piece of documentation is a cite event plus a produce event.
This makes all contributions legible, not just financial ones. In a commons economy, the ability to track and recognize non-monetary contributions is not a feature: it is the precondition for fair value distribution.
Cognitive Sovereignty
There is a deeper dimension. When economic events are recorded locally in plain text, queryable by AI tools, the economic history of a person’s work becomes part of their extended cognitive system. The Homunculus and Second Brain concept applies here: a well-maintained VF ledger reaches the threshold of genuine cognitive extension because it is accessible, reliable, and trusted without deliberation.
An AI assistant with access to this ledger can answer questions that would otherwise require hours of manual bookkeeping: “What was my effective rate on this project type last quarter?” or “Which processes consumed the most of my time relative to the value I received?” The economic record becomes a thinking tool, not just an accounting artifact.
This is economic sovereignty in the fullest sense: not just owning the data, but being able to think with it.
