ICP and Holochain share a foundational motivation: both aim to reduce dependency on corporate cloud infrastructure. But their architectures represent opposite philosophies about how to achieve it.

ICP replaces cloud servers with a coordinated subnet network. Nodes form subnets that reach Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus to execute canisters and maintain consistent state. This is still a consensus-based system; it requires global coordination across the subnet, just distributed across independent data centers rather than a single company. Governance is on-chain (NNS token holders vote on protocol upgrades), but the execution model still depends on shared, coordinated state.

Holochain removes consensus entirely at the application data layer. Each agent maintains their own source chain; data is validated by peers in a distributed hash table without any global agreement process. There is no shared state to coordinate. Holochain scales horizontally as more agents join: each agent contributes to both the network’s capacity and its resilience.
