Nondominium is a property-relations model in which resources are held in common and stewarded by designated custodians rather than owned exclusively. The term names a third path between private property and state control: contributors retain recognition and influence over what they bring, without excluding others from building upon it. Governance travels with the resource itself, embedded in its definition, rather than imposed by an external authority.
The concept underpins the active Nondominium project, a ValueFlows-compliant Holochain application that gives these property relations a digital backbone.
Core Idea: Custodianship Over Ownership
Conventional property relations answer one question: who owns this? Nondominium answers a different one: who is responsible for this? A resource, whether physical or digital, belongs to the commons and is managed by a custodian who holds it in trust for the community. Custodianship can transfer, but it cannot become exclusion. The custodian has the right to use, maintain, and coordinate the resource, and the obligation to pass it on in usable condition.
This maps to how many communities already operate in practice: tool libraries, community gardens, maker spaces, open hardware projects. Nondominium names the pattern these communities embody and gives it a formal vocabulary.
Lineage
The concept originates in the P2P Foundation tradition of commons-based peer production. Sensorica, co-founded by Tiberius Brastaviceanu, has operated under nondominium principles since 2011 as an Open Value Network: contributors pool resources, self-organize around projects, and share benefits according to transparent contribution accounting rather than wage labor or equity stakes.
The “composting” effect is central to the model. Knowledge and resources circulate and recombine rather than being locked behind intellectual property barriers. When a project completes its lifecycle, its assets return to the commons rather than being liquidated for creditors or captured by competitors. This enables graceful dissolution, the opposite of bankruptcy waste.
Relationship to Commons Theory
Nondominium sits at the intersection of several strands of commons thought:
- It operationalizes Ostrom’s Design Principles in digital infrastructure, embedding governance rules directly within resources rather than relying on external enforcement. The “nested enterprises” principle maps to the multi-scale custodianship chains the model produces.
- It extends Open Value Networks coordination patterns from accounting (tracking who contributed what) into property relations (tracking who stewards what).
- It provides the governance substrate for Fractal Sovereignty: distributed authority requires that resources themselves carry their governance rules, not that a central authority adjudicates disputes.
- It resists Tragedy of the Commons failure modes not through privatization or regulation, but through embedded custodianship accountability and transparent contribution trails.
Platform Cooperativism vs. Embedded Governance
Most software for managing shared resources assumes one of two things: private ownership (enterprise ERP systems) or a trusted central authority (platform cooperatives). The first excludes the commons by design. The second recreates it under a kinder face: the platform operator still controls the rules, the matching algorithm, the reputation system, and the communication channel.
Nondominium takes a structural rather than procedural approach. The governance rules, the custodianship chain, the contribution history, and the validation workflows travel with the resource specification itself. There is no platform to capture because the coordination layer is distributed across the agents who hold the resources. This is the practical meaning of Digital Fabrics: a fabric where governance is an emergent property of resource interactions, not a policy imposed from above.
Implementation as a COP System
From a Complexity-Oriented Programming perspective, nondominium is not an orchestrator. The protocol does not allocate resources. It declares local validation rules, and commons governance emerges from their interaction across agents. This makes the system anti-fragile: it strengthens through use and disruption rather than degrading under load, because there is no single point of control or failure to capture.
Significance
Nondominium represents a move from metaphor to mechanism. Commons-based peer production has demonstrated its viability in software (Linux, Wikipedia) and in physical communities (Sensorica’s hardware ventures). What it has lacked is native digital infrastructure for the property-relations layer: a way to track custodianship, enforce contribution recognition, and coordinate resource flows without a central intermediary. The concept provides the vocabulary for that infrastructure. The project builds it.
